Frequently Asked Questions
In
the 26 years I have been selling Murphy Bed Systems, these are the Questions
most frequently asked. (Want
to return - Use the site "Navigation" - the pilot is waiting)
Q:Where did you come up with the name FlyingBeds?
A: It was a slow day in the trade show booth. Somebody came by and asked what the name of my website was. Hell, it was 1994, I hadn't even thought about a website.! A search that night proved to me "Murphy Bed"" in any spelling was crazy. The next day, standing in the booth with no customers, on a Tuesday afternoon, I walked over to Bob in the booth next to mine and asked.. "What do you think of a website named "Falling Beds"? Bob said, "That won't fly".
Q: Why are your mechanisms
so expensive compared to the others I see?
A: The lift mechanism manufacturers we have chosen to represent
all qualify to be hospitality grade in life, ease of operation and product
liability. Our wall beds operate at standards exceeding residential use
where the family knows how to put the bed up and down. We can’t expect
a hotel guest to know anything more than to pull down the bed and get
in.
Q: Which lift mechanism is better,
Spring or Gas Piston?
A: Neither. Typical Murphy Bed springs have no controlled
action in lifting or lowering. Very limited in weight lift capacity. Limited
in design theme for exposed bedface. Gas pistons are fine for damping
action in hatch back cars, but to expect them to lift and lower weight
is exceeding their invention purpose. The dry climate in Colorado
limits the life of gaskets and within a year has noise issues. So, what do we suggest is the best Murphy Bed mechanism? Click on this link to learn how compresion coils and sequencial cold steel springs can do a superior job.
Q:How can I compare all the different
Murphy Bed companies?
A: Ask what the weight lift capacity is of their mechanism.
The higher the better.
- Ask if you can use any mattress. If it has
to be theirs, or a foam mattress… forget it!
- Ask if your Grandmother could operate the bed without instructions.
- Ask for an architectural specification sheet
on component and dimension requirements.
Be ready to be shocked how many don’t have a professional outline
of either! And here is a real clincher…
- Ask if each of their mechanisms has a serial number, and
if the company that put that number on the frame
is who holds the product liability insurance.
Q:
How do you ship
your furniture?
A: We use Common
Carriers to deliver the system to a local terminal near you. Then it
can be delivered to your home by a local cartage company. Our cartons
are made of ¾” plywood screwed and steel banded with pallet runners. These
cartons are heavy, but they arrive without damage to the component furniture
inside. The furniture inside is fully assembled. We do not manufacture
KD/RTA furniture. In most cases, the entire shipment is only 4 to 6 pieces
that has already been assembled and tested at the factory before leaving.

Q: What is your return policy?
A: We are a custom house in all facets of our operation. For that reason, we have a "no return" policy. Once your approval is given on finish and renderings we start work on making your FlyingBed perfect. On orders from Europe this policy is even more strict. I regret the harshness of this answer but it is only good business policy.
Q:
How hard is you system to install?
A: It
will take longer to unpackage and place the system in the room, than it
will take to assemble the system. The most difficult part of installation
is making sure you have securely attached the furniture surround to the
floor or wall. A good handyman can assemble normal systems with the
pictured outline we send with the FlyingBed.
Q:
Do you have electric
motor driven Murphy Beds?
A: We have two models in all sizes. The SICO Room Maker
can have an electric motor added to it’s compression coil lift mechanism. That is controlled by
a hardwired electric ‘rocker switch’. The Belitec mechanism is total electric
in operation and has a remote control that even has a ‘childproof’ lock
out code. Both models are available in either the Vertical or Horizontal
(sidefold) configuration.
Q:
How many design models do you
offer?
A: Our factory is set up to run only custom manufacture.
While we have models that are frequent in design theme and material selected,
we treat each order as a personal preference of your room’s personality
in purpose. We will ask you to approve a material and finish sample before
we start production of your Flying Bed. Because we are using the world’s
best Wall Bed mechanisms, it only makes sense
that we build only high quality furniture to hide that functional change.
Q: Do you deliver and install?
A: We offer installation on all our systems. 55% of our
systems are sent out of Colorado. Most those
systems elect to have a local handyman reassemble the Flying Bed. The
cost of our crew flying in and spending two nights in your city can become
prohibitive in cost justification. Instructions for a local handyman
are complete with 8 x 10” color photographs of the system fully assembled
in our factory. Reassembly is merely reversing the order of photographs
we took as we disassembled the system for shipping to you. All hardware
is included.
Q: Do you have stores or dealers outside
of Denver?
A: Nope. There is only one Flying Bed operation
in the world. You can find many Murphy Bed operations, mostly in the Sun Belt. Most are strictly
residential in their focus. Little design capacity, limited operational
standards and most are limited to laminate and veneer production systems.
Q: Do you have a catalog?
A: Yes, almost. We are happy to mail you a set of over 40
photographs that have a cost of manufacture assigned each model. These
are pictures of actual installations. From this introduction, you will
be able to design your own Flying Bed. Ideally, we want the new piece
of furniture to fit your room in design and functional change perfectly.
Q: Picture and prices catalog?
A: Want to know what we can do and how much it costs? Ask...
Q: Ready Ship Timbers?
A: Ask which is in stock.
Q: Delivery Service
A: Delivery and Freight is by ABF freight lines. This is a popular common carrier. After your shipment is shipped, you will receive a PRO number by email or fax. This will allow you to track the progress of your shipment to you. ABF will call you before they attempt delivery to your driveway. This is called ‘Curbside Service’. If you desire delivery and unpacking inside, we will quote you additional costs associated with this custom service. We will need to know physical layout (stairs, elevators, etc) for an accurate cost assignment for this service. If you miss the arrival of your FlyingBed, a second delivery will be arranged, but you will have to pay ABF an additional delivery charge for the return trip.
Notification of Delivery
ABF Trucking will notify you in advance of delivery to arrange a convenient time for you and their driver. If you are unable to receive the shipment within 5 business days of that contact, storage fees will be billed you on a daily rate.
Inspecting Your Delivery
Your FlyingBed is carefully crated in foam and plywood crates at our factory in Denver. The pictures we send you will demonstrate the shipment was perfect upon leaving the factory. All shipments are insured against damage…with one very big important qualification. Any damage caused from shipping must be noted on the delivery receipt or the insurance cannot be claimed. Any legal dispute resulting in damages from failure to comply with the Detailed Delivery Instructions will result in any dispute being held in the Courts of The City of Denver and the County of Denver, Colorado, where the freight originated from.
It is imperative that you make a claim of any damage or defect immediately upon delivery by noting the problem on ABF’s Bill of Lading.
Please verify the the correct number of crates were delivered and inspect your furniture carefully while the delivery person is still at your home, before signing your delivery Bill of Lading receipt. Your signature is your acknowledgement that your merchandise is satisfactory, complete and in order.
FlyingBeds of Denver and ABF freight lines will not accept any claims of damage if not noted on the Bill of Lading in front of the delivery person.
If you do not unpackage the crates because you do not have time, it is extremely important to note any dents, scuffs, punctures or damage to the crates on the Bill of Lading in Front of the Delivery Person.
When you do open the crate, and determine there indeed was internal damage, keep all packing material as is until an authorized inspector can come to your home to inspect the damage you found. The judgment of this independent service is final.
FlyingBeds will assist you in any damage caused after delivery and only charge actual material and direct labor for manufacture/remanufacture of the pieces required. This service will be invoiced and requested paid upon shipping to you.
Order Cancellation:
FlyingBeds can not accept cancellations after placement of order and receipt of your deposit. Purchasing of raw material will have been made within two days of your order placement, and assignment for manufacture assigned. In extreme cases, we will place the completed system on the showroom floor for consignment sell. See note.
Returns and Refunds:
FlyingBeds of Denver is the world’s most unique manufacturer of Murphy Beds. We are 100% custom in design and each order is built to your requirements. We have no standard production that would allow us to Restock a system. For that reason, we have no Return or Refund policy. That is to say, the system is made to your specification and not a ‘shelf-item’ that can be easily sold again.
That being said, in extreme cases, we will take the system back for display on the showroom floor for sale as consignment. This offer is totally at our willingness to understand the reasoning for such a drastic action. This is limited to newly manufactured systems, and not meant for systems made 15 years ago to find a new home.
The service charge will vary for this arrangement, and determined from actual costs incurred by FlyingBeds.
